Bruce Springsteen surprises crowd at festival, joins Social Distortion onstage

You can meet the most interesting people on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Just ask Mike Ness of the band Social Distortion, who played the evening of Sunday, Sept. 30 in the inaugural Sea.Hear.Now music, art and surf fest.

“There was this guy sitting around, doing nothing,” said Ness to the crowd “Maybe you could come to our show and sing a song or two?”

“You know who I’m talking about?”

Of course, it’s Bruce Springsteen. The Boss came on stage to play three songs, “Bad Luck,” “Misery Loves Company” and “Ring of Fire,” with Social Distortion to put an exclamation point on a fairly epic weekend of music, vibes and renewal in the city.

The Boss came out in his rock ‘n’ roll bar crashing flannel shirt, sleeves rolled up, ready for a rumble. He sang a verse of “Bad Luck,” then eyed Ness and guitarist Jonny Wickersham stared before playing a solo. Springsteen’s final verse on the Johnny Clash classic “Ring of Fire” was built up after Ness gave the crowd a couple of stylized glares.
