British brewer and pub owner Marston’s to merge with Carlsberg in £780million deal

BRITISH brewer and pub owner Marston's is set to merge with Carlsberg in a £780million deal.

The move will create the Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company.

The merger is set to create more choice, more innovation and possibly cheaper prices for customers.

Carlsberg's UK brands include Carlsberg Danish Pilsner, Carlsberg Expørt, Poretti, Tetley’s, Somersby cider and the London Fields Brewery craft portfolio, brewed in Hackney, London.

It also holds the brand licences in the UK for San Miguel, Mahou and the Brooklyn Brewery craft beer portfolio.

While pub operator Marston's is the brewer of premium cask and packaged ales, including Hobgoblin, Wainwright, Marston’s Pedigree and 61 Deep.

The Sun has asked what the merger means for employees at the two firms and we'll update this article once we hear back.

The proposed merger is now subject to shareholder approval and competition clearance, but is expected to complete in the third quarter of 2020.

Until these processes are completed, it will remain business as usual for both companies.

Ralph Findlay, chief executive of Marston's, said: "I am delighted to announce today's joint venture with Carlsberg UK.

"This new partnership acknowledges Marston's strategy, position and consistent outperformance against the UK beer market, realising value for shareholders today, whilst retaining an interest in the future upside of the combined entity."

While Tomasz Blawat, managing director of Carlsberg UK, said: "We are excited to move into the next phase of our growth strategy.

"Our intent for the Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company is for it to become a platform for growth for all of our customers and suppliers, offering a bigger beer portfolio of complementary international, national and regional brands.

"We believe the new business will deliver even more value for employees, customers and consumers, thereby creating greater future growth potential."
