Best Christmas sandwiches 2019 – We taste and pick our favourites from Greggs, Sainsbury's, Lidl and Tesco

CHRISTMAS begins the moment a festive sarnie passes your lips, so to help you get into the spirit of the season we've tried the best of what the high street has to offer.

We asked each retailer for their top, most innovative Christmas lunchtime option that's new to shelves this year and put them to a team of tasters to give their verdict.

Our trusted volunteers stepped up to the plate and ranked 21 sandwiches on appearance, taste and value for money out of five, with an overall score of 15.

Forget turkey and cranberry sauce because Sainsbury's Christmas market sandwich, whose main ingredient is ham hock, came joint first out of this year's newcomers, scoring 14.

Sharing its podium is Gregg's pigs under blankets baguette that was praised for being a real, tasty winter warmer.

Don't worry though, we also tried the turkey classic from each of the menus too in case you're after the more traditional flavours of a Christmas dinner squashed between slices of bread.

Gregg's took the top spot in this league too, with its Christmas lunch sandwich scooping an overall 12.

All of the sandwiches are available to buy now unless we've said otherwise, and you can see how the dishes compared to last year's spread.

Here's our take on what the high street has to offer you this festive season:

This sarnie was packed with meat and is spread out well with turkey in all of the corners. The stuffing is a bit slimy though and there's too much mayonnaise.

Morrisons turkey lunch and stuffing, £2.50 – Total score: 8

Appearance: 3, Taste: 3, Value for money: 2

To look at, there seems to be plenty of thick slices of turkey but when you open it up, there's a high concentration of meat in the middle and a distinct lack of it around the edges. The stuffing is tasty but it over does it with the mayo making it a bit too moist.
