Getting a weighted blanket changed my life. Since the first time I tried mine, I haven’t slept without it. The gentle heft helps me fall asleep, keeps me from tossing and turning, and has greatly reduced the numbers of nights I lie awake with anxiety. Still, when I wrote about my experience and recommended weighted blankets to the world, I worried they might not be right for everybody. These things are seriously heavy and thus pretty hot, which is not ideal for folks out there who roast in their sleep. Thankfully, BlanQuil has introduced a new cooling blanket.
The BlanQuil Chill is a weighted blanket made with special fabric that absorbs body heat and wicks away moisture. It’s designed for people who get really hot or sweat a lot in their sleep ― and since I know so many people like that, I wanted to try it out and see if I should be spreading the weighted blanket gospel to them, too.
Just as I suspected, my experience with the cooling weighted blanket was a lot like my first experience. Though the Chill didn’t feel as heavy as my regular BlanQuil ― I tried the 15 lb model of each ― I was able to quickly fall asleep and stay that way through the night. And while the pleasant sleep I got was the same with both blankets, I did notice some differences with the cooling model. Here are a few things to know before you get your own Chill:
It’s cool to the touch.
You know that amazing feeling when you flip over your pillow and realizing the other side is delightfully cool? That’s what this blanket feels like. You’ll realize why they call it the Chill the second you pull it out of the box.
But it doesn’t stay cool all night.
Just like the other side of the pillow, the Chill eventually warms up. The blanket stays cold for 15-20 minutes as you fall asleep before it begins to regulate to your body temperature. Personally I didn’t have time to notice it warming up ― I passed out almost instantly.
It might slide off while you’re sleeping.
This was probably the only downside of the Chill for me. I noticed that the fabric has a very silky feel to it (as opposed to the regular BlanQuil, which has a texture like velvet) and I was worried that it might slip off my bed if I moved around in my sleep. I was right, and it did fall off one night. To be fair, it only happened the one time over the course of three weeks, and I was probably super restless that night.
Still, this slippage could actually be an advantage if you are a truly hot sleeper and don’t necessarily want something heavy on you all night. What’s nice about the Chill is that it feels lighter than the regular weighted blanket, so it’s easier to kick it off if you wake up and want a break.
You don’t have to worry about spills.
The Chill’s cover is removable, and machine washable. It’s also dryer safe. So if you, like me, spill something on yours the first week you have it, it’s no sweat. Get it? Because it’s a cooling blanket it? Okay, just try it.
