Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt said it took time for his daughter, Alice, to adjust after her mother, Michelle McNamara, died in her sleep in April 2016 and he remarried writer and actress Meredith Salenger in November 2017.
“There was some weirdness,” Oswalt told former “Saturday Night Live” star Kevin Nealon on the actor’s YouTube series, “Hiking With Kevin.”
The lovable funnyman explained by using the example of his daughter’s chores.
“When Michelle was Alice’s mom, Alice was 3, 4, 5 – she was still a little kid,” Oswalt, 50, said. “And now Michelle passes away, a year or so goes by, and then I marry Meredith, and now Alice is 10, and both Meredith and I are like, ‘You have responsibilities, you have chores.’ … You know, we are treating her like a 10-year-old.”
Alice, Oswalt said, acted confused as to why he and Salenger insist on chores.
“There’s been times where she goes, ‘With Mommy, I didn’t have to do this,’ and I (said), ‘Well, that’s because you were 5, and you know if Mommy were here, you’d be doing all this same stuff, probably even more.’ ”

The “Ratatouille” voice actor and Nealon discussed early stand-up years, Jesus and faith, CBD oil and how tragedy is ripe for comedy.
“It’s the life force reasserting itself. I’m going to be this sad, and no matter how much despair wants me down, I have an opposite force in terms of laughter and comedy,” Oswalt said. “People see that process happen, it’s like this reminder of, like, you can still live. You’ve got the energy in you to push past this.”
