If Marie Kondo has inspired you to be more tidy or you’re just looking to get more organized in the new year, you’re not alone. We’ve all been in a rush to get ready and looking for our favorite blouse and can’t find it anywhere. While trying to find it we dig through old sweatshirts, see that tube top we haven’t worn for years and then we hear Kondo’s famous catch-phrase in our head, “Does this spark joy?” Well, those old pair of bedazzled heels did at one point bring us joy, but now they’re just collecting dust.
Thankfully, there are many ways to maximize the space and organization of your closet. One obvious way is to get rid of clothes you haven’t worn for years. Cameron Silver, owner of vintage store Decades in Los Angeles, has great advice if you’re struggling to know which clothes should be retired from your wardrobe, per New York Times.
He suggests asking yourself three questions: “1. Does the garment still fit me? 2. Is it appropriate for my current lifestyle? 3. Have I worn it in the last two years?” If your answer to these questions is “no” it’s likely time for that piece to find a new home.
Other simple ways to maximize closet space and make it look organized
Another easy way to make sure you have enough space for all of your clothes is to switch the type of hangers you’re using. We’ve all collected a variety of colorful and strange looking hangers over the years and figured if it’s not broken, why fix it? Wrong. Real Simple recommends purchasing a set of no-slip, slimline hangers. Not only will everything match and look nice, the new hangers also make sure you’re utilizing every bit of space you have in your closet.
Adding a second closet rod to your wardrobe, can also be a game-changer. If you already have one near the ceiling, try adding another one closer to the ground or vice versa. But definitely make sure you can reach both before installing! You don’t want to be struggling to reach your favorite LBD.
Silver also recommends hanging your blouses to save space, but putting T-shirts and sweaters in dresser drawers, per New York Times. Also if you’re not going to wear that summer dress for awhile, he explained you should put it in a breathable canvas garment bag and store it somewhere else. Basically, don’t take it out until you’re ready to sip margaritas by the ocean again.
Good luck on decluttering and remember these wise words from Kondo, per Good Reads, “Keep only those things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest.”
