It’s powerful when celebrities speak out about miscarriage in an effort to end the idea that there’s something taboo about the topic — and yesterday, The Bachelor couple Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Lauren Burnham added their voices; sharing the heartbreaking news that Burnham suffered a miscarriage in an emotional video on their YouTube channel. In the video, the couple detailed their struggles over the past month after they learned that they were expecting their second child. Burnham began the video and said: “This isn’t our typical positive vibes type of video.”
Hope — and humor — were at the start of their pregnancy journey, as they shared more details of their experience; Luyendyk Jr. believed that Burnham was expecting, and she took a pregnancy test — with the intention of doctoring it — to pull a prank on her husband. But in a sweet twist, Luyendyk Jr.’s instinct was right. In a flashback clip, the couple celebrated their daughter, Alessi’s first birthday, and hinted at the news. “Guess we’re a family of 4 pretty soon,” Burnham said.
Miscarriages, of course, are a painful subject that many shy away from speaking about openly. Yet, with one in four pregnancies ended ending in miscarriage, women need to be supported if they choose to speak about their experiences publicly and honestly. Most recently, Jinger Duggar and her husband, who are now expecting their second child, opened up about her miscarriage.
Another celebrity speaking out against the silence is Paula Faris, the former co-host of Good Morning America and The View. In January 2020, she went on The View to explain why she brought her 12-year-old daughter into the bathroom with her to show the pre-teen the realities of what it is like to experience a miscarriage. She said: “I knew the signs, and I brought my daughter into the restroom with me. I showed her what was going on and I said ‘I just want to let you know … the baby is probably no longer viable.” She continued: “This is normal, it happens to so many women, it’s happened to me a couple of other times.”
Burnham, as it turns out, suffered what’s called a missed miscarriage, which, according to the American Pregnancy Association, is “when embryonic death has occurred but there is not any expulsion of the embryo.”
“I was really excited to tell you guys that we were pregnant,” she shared in the video, “and I feel like this is the best way for us to tell the whole story.”
