Savannah Guthrie Suffers Serious Eye Injury from Toy Train Hurled by Toddler Son

This parenthood gig is hazardous; proceed with caution. Not only is there a high risk of LEGO foot injuries (been there, owwww), there’s also a chance your toddler might hurl a missile in the form of a toy train at your face — as Savannah Guthrie of the Today Show can attest.

Guthrie has been absent on the show this week due to such a freak accident. She phoned her colleagues on set Wednesday to give them the scoop on her absence:

“I got hit… Charley threw a toy train right at my eye and it tore my retina,” Guthrie said. “It happened last week, actually, and then I lost my vision in my right eye about 24 hours later and then it turned out to be kind of serious. They were afraid my retina was detached.”

Guthrie also posted to Instagram to let fans know what had happened:

“Here’s the reason I’ve been out for a couple days. This little cutie has super strength!! Last week, Charley threw this train at my eye and turns out it caused a large tear in my retina, which has caused me to lose sight temporarily in my right eye! It was a little bit touch and go over the last few days but it looks like the retina will hold and not detach and I won’t need full eye surgery….”

The Today Show wished Guthrie and her poor eye well in a Nov. 27 tweet:

Guthrie’s not the first celeb parent to sport battle scars after an innocent run-in with kids. Back in 2013, Sheryl Crow was spotted sporting an eye patch. Why? She’d gotten smacked in the eye — hard — during a tennis match with her kids.

“So this is what happens when you play tennis with your kids,” Crow captioned an Instagram photo at the time. “Someone has a good forehand! #mommyinjury”

Other celebs who suffered at the hands of their own kids include Gordon Ramsay and Tina Fey. Chef Ramsay sneaked into the back seat of the car just before his daughter Meghan’s first driving lesson. When Meghan hopped in the car, she immediately shoved the driver’s seat back, smashing Ramsay in the cojones, according to the BBC.

Speaking to talk show host David Letterman in 2013, Tina Fey famously quipped that her then-toddler daughter was a complete “sociopath.”

“I was giving her a bath one night and she was overtired,” Fey explained. “I said, ‘Okay, bath time over.’ She got real mad that I took her out of the bath. She looked me square in the eyes and with two tiny little hands, choked me.

“It’s so funny because they’re not strong enough to kill you,” Fey laughed.

Parents, be careful out there. This is definitely not a job for the fainthearted — or those with slow reflexes.
