Reese Witherspoon’s daughter Ava Phillippe may be her lookalike, but she is also her own person, which means an acting career isn’t something her iconic mom necessarily encourages.
“She’s not an actress,” the Academy Award-winning star told Fox 5 New York about whether she or Ava would be open to portraying her in a potential biopic. “But she’s so happy with her life and I am just so enormously proud of her and the incredible, compassionate young woman she’s become.”
“It’s very cool having adult children,” added Witherspoon. “You just can’t believe that they’re grown up and I’m just — I could cry talking about her, I love her so much.
As parents, we have a lot of hopes and dreams for our children, but it’s important to make sure we don’t push our own agendas on them. That seems to be exactly what Witherspoon and ex-husband Ryan Phillippe have done for daughter Ava, 21, a model and student at UC Berkeley, and son Deacon, 17, who is pursuing music. Witherspoon also shares 8-year-old son Tennessee with husband Jim Toth.
At times, our children may look or seem like mini versions of ourselves, so it’s easy to assume they want the same things out of life. However, pressuring them to fulfill our own dreams, even if we have good intentions, can backfire.
“Often, parents have preconceived notions about how they want their children to be and respond poorly when the child doesn’t live up to those expectations,” clinical psychologist Natalie Feinblatt previously told SheKnows. “Things typically go much better for parent and child if the parent does their best to wait and see who their child turns out to be — and is then loving and accepting of that person.”
So, if you’ve got unfulfilled goals, go out and pursue them yourself. Your kids will be happy to cheer you on.
