Like her late mother-in-law, Diana, Duchess Catherine of Cambridge — Kate Middleton — is truly a princess of the people, raising down-to-earth kids (well, as down-to-earth as you can manage, as a royal) and spending lots of time playing with them as well as cooking and baking with (and for) them.
Recently she revealed that her second son, third child, Prince Louis, has started chatting away in earnest — and one of his favorite first words happened to be “Mary.” Mary, Queen of Scots? Nope, more like Mary Berry, the honorable judge of popular show The Great British Bake Off. How cute is that?
The Queen is well known for her Christmas well wishes, but this year Prince William and Duchess Kate collaborated with former Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry to create a charming holiday special airing today, A Berry Royal Christmas (we can’t even). The Daily Mail reports that in the special, Kate tells Mary Berry, “One of Louis’ first words was ‘Mary’ because right at his height are all my cooking books in the kitchen bookshelf… And children are really fascinated by faces, and your faces are all over your cooking books. and he would say ‘That’s Mary Berry’… so he would definitely recognize you if he saw you today.”
We would love to know what it feels like to know that your name was a baby prince’s first word. Can you imagine?
The Duchess also revealed in the special that she makes all of her children’s birthday cakes by hand. Prince William and Duchess Catherine share Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 19 months.
“I love making the cake,” she says to Mary Berry, according to Cosmopolitan. “It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much. But I love it.”
The Cambridges (as they are known informally — again, as informally as you can be known when you are in direct line for the throne of England) posted about the BBC television special on their Instagram page:
The show airs tonight and features many of the charities and organizations that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wish to thank for their service.
We’d just like to thank Prince Louis for the Christmas gift he gave Mary Berry. Swoon.
