OITNB’s Yael Stone Felt 'Like a Failure’ For Needing a C-Section

Yael Stone’s at-home water birth didn’t go according to plan. In the end, she needed an emergency C-section. And as a result, the Orange Is the New Black actress felt like “a failure.”

The 33-year-old Australia native revealed in a recent Instagram post that she had hoped to deliver naturally. But after 18 hours of labor, she and her partner, Jack Manning Bancroft, headed to the hospital for medical intervention.

“The first 10 hours felt like a warrior, after that something changed,” Stone wrote. “The next 8 hours had me questioning myself, digging deeper than ever before and still not making the progress that our baby needed.”

She continued: “I felt like a failure when it was time to go to hospital but we were so incredibly lucky to have that option.”

The Netflix star was rushed to the operating room. “When our beautiful daughter arrived she needed help to breathe and I needed help to stay conscious,” Stone shared in a second Instagram post. “Without modern medicine and the expertise of the doctors and nurses our baby would not be here, I would not be here.”

Stone noted she she still taking “time to make peace” with what happened. “Our birth experience was not what I’d wanted for,” she told her more than one million followers. “But I know how lucky I am to hold my baby and feel her heart beating next to mine.”

Us Weekly exclusively confirmed in June that the couple welcomed their daughter, Pemau Stone Bancroft, on May 30. “Her mum and dad are very tired and very much in love,” Stone’s rep told Us at the time.

Stone landed her fame-making role as hopeless romantic Lorna Morello Muccio on OITNB in 2013. Bancroft is the CEO of AIME, a global mentoring organization for disadvantaged youth. The couple began dating in 2017.
