Back in our day, if we wanted our Barbies to do Star Wars cosplay, we had to braid their hair and roll them into Leia’s buns ourselves. Maybe out moms would help us fashion a cloth napkin into a dress, if we were lucky. Today’s young Star Wars fans have it a bit easier when it comes to ready-made toys from the saga. And on this May 4, Star Wars Day, Mattel has released some Star Wars-themed Barbie dolls both parents and kids will appreciate.
If you were picturing mere action figures, you are woefully underestimating Barbie’s ability to show up her plastic peers. The Star Wars x Barbie collection looks like what would happen if the Met Gala had a Star Wars theme. These are from the Barbie Signature line — with a higher price point that indicates they’re as much for collectors (as in, grownups who love toys) as for children.
As The Hollywood Reporter points out, the first Star Wars x Barbie release was last August, in anticipation of The Rise of Skywalker movie. Those included three dolls inspired by the first movie, A New Hope: a very chic Darth Vader Barbie in a black latex dress covered by a signature Vader cape; an R2-D2 Barbie with blue hair and droid-ish mini-dress; and an elegant Leia in a flowing white gown and dramatic, floor-length sleeves.
For Star Wars Day, the toymaker added four new dolls. They are:
Rey
Rey wears a fabulous pleated, belted dress that would not do our heroine any favors as it dragged on the sands of Tatooine. The upturned corners of her eyes make her really look like Daisy Ridley.
C3PO
C3PO’s gorgeous Afro would make any droid jealous. The way the designers turned those robot eyes into sunglasses and the classic gold body into a disco-ready dress is magnificent.
Chewbacca
Chewbacca is a character we didn’t think you could possibly turn into a feminine doll. TBH, it kind of makes us worry that she’s not the Barbie version of Chewbacca, but rather a Barbie who had a Wookie skinned and turned into an all-fur outfit. Sorry!
The Stormtrooper
This Stormtrooper sports her blond hair trimmed in a helmet-like lob with blunt bangs. That bodice and mini-skirt paired with shiny tights and thigh-high boots make the Imperial Army look a lot more fun than we previously assumed
While these dolls were just announced and are available for pre-order, they won’t ship until June. That leaves you and your kids more time to invent your own versions of Star Wars costumes.
