A good look! Model Mara Martin strutted her stuff at the Sports Illustrated Swim Search runway show on Sunday, July 15, while breast-feeding her 5-month-old daughter, Aria.
The former college volleyball player sported a metallic gold bikini, while her infant rocked noise-cancelling headphones and green bathing suit bottoms over a diaper.
The breast-feeding part happened organically. “Mara was holding her baby and was nursing her. I was like, ‘Do you just want to nurse while you walk down the runway? And she was like, ‘I would love to do that,’” MJ Day, editor of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue told Today on Tuesday, July 17.
Martin explained that Aria was getting hungry. “It was her dinnertime because the show kept getting pushed back,” she told Today. “Honestly, I didn’t even think twice about it because I do it every single day.”
Meanwhile, Martin is floored by all the attention she and Aria are receiving.
“I can’t believe I am waking up to headlines with me and my daughter in them for doing something I do every day,” the first-time mom began in an Instagram post on Monday, July 16. “It is truly so humbling and unreal to say the least. I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breast-feeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL!”
The Michigan native was one of 16 finalists chosen to walk in the show that featured Paralympian snowboarder Brenna Huckaby, a woman who had recently had a mastectomy and plus-sized models.
Martin noted in her post that “there are far more deserving headlines” from Sunday night’s swimsuit event. “To every single woman that rocked that runway with me. Be proud. I know I am of you!” she gushed. “You have all inspired me in ways unimaginable. I love you!!! #siswimsearch.”
