Just over four months after welcoming her son, Ever Leo, into the world, Lea Michele is experiencing a dreaded postpartum moment so many moms go through: her hair is falling out. But as far as we can tell, the actor is taking postpartum hair loss in stride.
“The postpartum hair loss is REAL,” Michele wrote on her Instagram Stories, sharing a photo of a wad of dark tresses in her hand.
Oh yeah, it’s real. Those pregnancy hormones that allow you to grow a baby inside you also often prevent your hair from falling out for months. But then once the baby’s out, you’re in for an unpleasant shock, no matter how many people warn you about it. Your body is already going through so much, and now this?!?
“Changes like delivery, breastfeeding, sleep deprivation and hormones place a stress on the body, and in response the body works to conserve energy and resources from areas of low priority, such as hair growth, in favor of supporting other more critical changes taking place,” dermatologist Dr. Lindsey Bordone told SheKnows last year. “When this happens many hairs are shifted to the shed phase of the hair cycle and then in a one- to three-month period, shedding begins.”
For most women, the hair eventually comes back — to pre-pregnancy levels, not, sadly those thick locks you may have had during pregnancy. There are some methods moms swear by to speed up postpartum hair regrowth or cope with the time in between — think supplements and headbands.
For her part, Michele has different plan in mind.
“Enjoying this long hair while it lasts because the mom bob is right around the corner,” she captioned a mirror selfie on Instagram Stories.
Whether she’s just joking or not, we don’t know. But as a proud short-haired mom 4 life, I say, welcome to the club, Lea!
