Ever wonder what the queen’s relationship with Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton is like? By the looks of it, she’s very close with her grandsons’ better halves. From attending official engagements to spending quality family time together, the queen enjoys Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s company. She also fully embraces them as members of the royal family, despite their commoner backgrounds.
Ahead, we take a closer look at the queen’s relationship with Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton. Plus, the real reasons she was so quick to welcome them into royal life.
She trusts them with important royal duties
It’s evident that the queen trusts her granddaughters-in-law with important royal duties. In fact, Queen Elizabeth has even passed some of her responsibilities onto Kate — such as royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club — and allowed Meghan to get started on royal family responsibilities before her wedding day.
Unlike Meghan, Kate didn’t partake in royal family duties — which typically consist of charity events and official engagements — until after her wedding to Prince William.

She enjoys their company
By the looks of it, the queen enjoys spending time with her granddaughters-in-law. In fact, she has been photographed laughing and smiling with both Meghan and Kate on several occasions.
This type of public behavior is new for the queen. She rarely giggled with Princess Diana — at least for the cameras — and she and Camilla Parker Bowles have a rocky relationship.
She’s proud of them
It’s no secret that the queen is proud of her grandchildren, including her granddaughters-in-law. The queen even keeps a never before seen photo of Harry and Meghan in a sitting area in Buckingham Palace. Also, she also has pictures of Kate, William, and their children on display.
She respects their opinions
Queen Elizabeth might make the rules, but she has an immense amount of respect for Kate and Meghan’s opinions. In fact, the queen has even let up on a few royal family rules to accommodate the royal women’s views. While the family is still advised to stay out of politics, she allows Meghan to embrace her feminist side.

She considered them family even before their royal weddings
Despite their commoner backgrounds, the queen loves Kate and Meghan and fully embraces them as members of the royal family. Before she was a member of royalty, the queen invited Meghan to join the royal family on special occasions such as Christmas and Commonwealth Day.
She loves how happy they make her grandsons
The queen has learned a lot about love and relationships since the divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. She now recognizes the importance of happiness in a relationship and loves how much joy both Kate and Meghan bring to her grandsons’ lives.
She respects their families
In addition to respecting her granddaughters-in-law, she also admires their families — especially, Kate’s family and Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland. In fact, she’s gone so far as to allow Kate and William to celebrate Christmas with the Middletons every other year (something that is unheard of for the royal family). She also invited Meghan’s mother to tea before the royal wedding and was reportedly very impressed by her.
