Hilaria Baldwin is a special kind of celebrity mom. There are times when we can absolutely relate to the mother of four, as she does mother-of-four things. Then there are times when she very much seems like the wife of Alec Baldwin and an accomplished yoga goddess. When SheKnows recently caught up with Baldwin at an event celebrating the launch of Tommee Tippee’s new Closer to Nature 3-in-1 convertible glass bottles, which she is endorsing, she shared stories that illustrate both of those parts of her identity.
Case in point: A couple of weeks ago, an awkward half-cropped photo of her husband appeared on her Instagram.
“It took me a while to figure out, to do the calculation of how did this photo that’s cropped so oddly [get posted]?” Baldwin told SheKnows. Turns out, her kids were playing with her phone. See what we mean — whose kids haven’t inadvertently posted to our social media or texted someone without our knowledge? She’s just like us.
But then we asked her why the photo — of a very handsome Alec Baldwin taken long before she’d met him — was on her phone to begin with.
Turns out all her gay male friends had been texting it to her after it had appeared in a magazine, saying, “Your husband is so hot!”
Yeah, that’s not something that happens to most of us. But she left that detail out of her edited Instagram post, instead writing, “This is reason number 1 million that I don’t have naked selfies…no one can hack you and bribe you…and more realistically: my three-year-old can’t post them on Instagram.”
Speaking of posting photos without permission, we asked Baldwin whether there are times she thinks twice about sharing pics of 6-year-old Carmen, 4-year-old Rafael, 3-year-old Leo, and 1-year-old Romeo. The criteria she stays within is: anything they won’t be embarrassed about when they’re older. “I don’t post when they’re on the toilet,” she added.
“At this point, they don’t really care, and they’re cute they’re all cute photos,” said Baldwin, who talks about her kids professionally now as she co-hosts the podcast Mom Brain with Daphne Oz.
Posting photos of the kids was actually something she started to do for their protection.
“I started sharing on Instagram about my children as a defense against paparazzi, because we had a ton [following us], and it was so unpleasant and aggressive,” she told SheKnows. “And eventually somebody told me, ‘All you have to do is post about them all the time, and then the bounty for the image goes way down.’ I went from seeing many paparazzi a day to rarely any.”
Along the way, she discovered a side benefit to becoming a mom of Instagram: “I found this amazing mom community, and I just learned so much.”
Whether it’s her time with that community or her own natural instincts as a person, she does find a way to connect to other moms on her podcast and online, where Baldwin shared last fall that she had suffered two miscarriages in one year.
“We are so lucky with our 4 healthy babies — and we will never lose sight of this,” she wrote in November.
Baldwin has a great ability to connect in person too. When I told her that as a mother of one, I feel like a total amateur watching her raise four kids, she had the best response.
“I got pregnant breastfeeding my kids, which I thought you couldn’t do,” she said, laughing about how she wound up with so many. “I didn’t expect it, but I just liked it so much. One kid feels like a lot. And two kids feels like a lot — because you’re putting your whole heart and soul into it, so it’s always a lot.”
That it is!
