If someone could step up and give Gianna Floyd her father back, that’s probably all she’d wish for right now. That’s the thought that plagues us, even after we see the outpouring of generous donations George Floyd’s youngest daughter has received since his death last month. On Tuesday, Texas Southern University issued a statement announcing that Gianna, now 6, will get a full scholarship to the school, should she want to attend.
“We know that this gesture cannot take the place of her dad’s loving presence, but we hope that it will contribute to easing her journey through life,” TSU Board of Regents Chair Albert H. Myres said in a statement.
TSU is a public, historically Black university in Houston, Floyd’s adopted hometown — where Gianna and her mother Roxie Washington still live.
The school also issued a resolution honoring Floyd.
“Whereas George Floyd Jr. will be remembered as both a leader and a mentor, a colleague and a friend, as well as a major inspiration to change the world through endless pursuit of justice,” reads the resolution, posted on Twitter.
Should Gianna Floyd not choose to attend TSU, it seems she has other options. The GoFundMe page set up by her family’s lawyers has raised more than $2 million as of this writing. Kanye West also set up a 529 college fund for the young girl last week, a rep confirmed to People. It’s great that the girl has a promising future to look forward to, but we also hope that someone is looking to contribute to her wellbeing in the present. What she needs is to know she is safe and loved, and she may even need trauma therapy after her father’s death.
