There’ve been so many food recalls over the past few months, that we don’t even bother feigning surprise when a new one crops up. That said, Cracker Barrel’s recent pineapple recall was a bit of a shocker—seeing as it was decorative fruit being recalled, rather than the real thing.
On Cracker Barrel Old Country Store’s website, there’s a Recall Notices link. The page states, “This page identifies certain products which Cracker Barrel Old Country Store has sold at our retail stores or on our website that may post a potential safety concern.” It also notes that the restaurant, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, posts information regarding voluntary recalls on that page. The Driftwood Pineapple is listed, due to the sharp metal leaves on top of the pineapple posing a risk. More specifically, the Safety Recall notice says, “Metal leaves on top of pineapple may be sharp and cause a cut.”
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the pineapple’s leaves have indeed caused injury—Cracker Barrel has received two reports of people that have cut their fingers on the leaves. One of the consumers who cut their finger had to get stitches.
The Driftwood Pineapples were sold at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store locations across the country and on Cracker Barrel’s website between June 6, 2018 and August 4, 2018 for about $40. The recall description describes the Driftwood Pineapples: “They are shaped from tan driftwood spikes, have spiked galvanized metal leaves at the top and measure approximately 19 inches high by 9.5 inches wide by 9.6 inches in diameter.”
The Driftwood Pineapple is described on the product page as “handcrafted from driftwood twigs for an island-inspired look you’ll love.” The decorative fruit was made to be displayed on a mantel, credenza, shelf, or table “for a unique splash of character and charm!” per the product page.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises consumers to “immediately stop using the recalled pineapples.” If you are in possession of a Driftwood Pineapple, you should return it to any Cracker Barrel Old Country Store for a full refund. If you bought it online, you will be contacted directly. For additional information, you can call 800-333-9566.
