The internet can be an ugly place. From “fake news” to general negativity, it can feel like something of a dumpster fire. And don’t even get me started on the trolls — those who feel empowered by anonymity to fling hurtful commentary or pose just-plain-offensive questions. Case in point: the fan who just asked Chrissy Teigen if she’s pregnant.
The comment was posted on Teigen’s Instagram, on a sweet photo of her with husband John Legend. And while Teigen looked stunning in the shot — the host of Lip Sync Battle sported a white towel and some pretty kick-ass pumps — that didn’t keep one busybody from injecting their unsolicited opinion. The fan wrote two words: “baby bump?”
Of course, the commenter probably didn’t mean to be hurtful. They added an emoji, after all, the internet equivalent of “maybe don’t take this shit too seriously.” But still, the presumptuous remark was ignorant and rude, and Teigen was having none of it.
“I know you didn’t mean it to be rude but think twice about asking this,” Teigen wrote. There are people who struggle with their weight, and their body. There are people who feel super self-conscious in their own skin, and “there are people who have trouble conceiving and it hurts every time. I’m not pregnant but would be happy if I were. But I’m also happy.”
Teigen isn’t the first celeb to be asked this question. Just last week, a fan wondered whether or not Outlander star Caitriona Balfe was pregnant when she posted a pic on Twitter of her with *gasp* a slightly rounded stomach. And while Balfe’s response was quick and swift — the actress let everyone know she was not expecting, it was “that time” of the month — Balfe also caused the hashtag #NotAllStomachsAreWashboards to trend on Twitter because it’s true, most of us do not have abs, and because it’s relatable AF. Everyday women face similar remarks all the time. In my mid-20’s, a well-meaning family member questioned whether or not I was carrying a baby or a few extra pounds. (It was pizza… and too many cans of cheap beer.) But it sucked. To be asked such a blunt and personal question hurt.
So for those in the back, let me be clear: You should never, EVER ask a woman if she is pregnant. It is ignorant. It is arrogant. It is rude, crude and — quite frankly — it is not of your damn business. Full stop.
