“Well, since this year is only our family’s second Halloween together, we have pretty young traditions! Our favorite tradition so far is one I had with my family all growing up, which is carving pumpkins and lighting candles to put inside. And once we’ve roasted the pumpkin seeds, we eat them and watch a Halloween themed movie while our pumpkins glow. I know I always had so much fun collecting Halloween candy growing up, so I would have been devastated if my parents had touched my candy! I’ll let my little ones enjoy their hard night’s work just once a year, even if it is total sugar overload. They only get to be little kids for so long!” Lauren Akins and her husband Thomas Rhett are parents to daughters Willa Gray, 2, and Ada James, 14 months. The family is currently on tour with Thomas Rhett, and Lauren is raising money and awareness for the Love One foundation, most recently designing a line of necklaces to support the organization’s mission of supporting children in Uganda, Willa’s birth country.
“My favorite Halloween tradition to date is family themed costumes! Last year I found these adorable Russian nesting doll costumes and could not resist turning the whole family into one! Josh and I had a blast taking the kids trick or treating and being a part of the revelry versus just being the parental bystanders.
There’s a new tradition I recently heard about where a good witch comes at night and will trade you a gift for all your Halloween candy….I’m interested to see if my kids will make the trade or keep the candy. My only real rule with all the sweets is that they get just two pieces a night after dinner until it’s all gone. Or until I throw it away and tell them they’ve eaten it al!”

“Every year on Halloween our friends gather at our house for a little pre-trick or treat party. We have some fun snacks and make some fun drinks using Casa Mexico tequila, then we head down the street and let the kids go nuts.
We let our kids pick out their favorite candy and then hide it – and my wife usually steals all the milk chocolate. We take to the rest of the candy to my Extra TV crew and let them go to town.”

“Decorations! We started two years ago purchasing decorations for our home and then bringing them out and adding to them each year. I always wanted to do that for my kids. He gets so excited when it’s time to put them all out again and then to go shopping for new ones each year.
I’m pretty lenient on Halloween night. He can have his five favorite candies when we get home. Thank the Lord he doesn’t like Reese’s and I get all of them! Then he can have two pieces a day following Halloween. My husband and I definitely reach into that bag on a daily basis so it doesn’t last long!
Also, a hack for the younger kids that don’t know any better… get them a smaller sized candy bucket or bag to take around trick or treating. It fills up way faster and once it’s full they just assume they hit the jackpot and you can go home!”

“Besides Trick-or-Treating, our favorite family Halloween tradition has been to visit this awesome jack-o-lantern experience in our area called The Great Jack O Lantern Blaze. Thousands of pumpkins are carved into incredibly intricate works of art and are lit from within. They create giant dragons, families of dinosaurs, and even a moving carousel of skeleton animals– all made out of pumpkins. My kids love being up past their bedtime and walking through the exhibit! We’ve gone for the past few years and I’m still blown away every time.”

“The first is from Dahlia’s first Halloween. She was only 10 months old and a friend had given her the chef costume, so she was our ‘Top Baby Chef’ that year! This year she wanted to be a rainbow, which seemed particularly appropriate in a year when I feel prompting kindness, equality and diversity is more important than ever, and we have been trying to teach her about these values. When the costume arrived this week she couldn’t wait to try it on so we snapped this pic. She’s very proud of it!
As for our favorite Halloween tradition, Dahlia loves the children’s Halloween parade that takes place in a beautiful park in our neighborhood every year with hundreds of kids. But Jeremy and I love our tradition of the ‘switch witch,’ in which we trade about 3/4 of her candy at the end of the night for one toy or game of her choosing….so far she hasn’t resisted!”

“My son has only been living in the U.S. for a few years and we don’t celebrate Halloween in Brazil so it was all very new to him. I was told that they shut a few streets down in Brooklyn for a big Halloween trick-or-treating block party so that’s been our go to each year. He really makes out like a bandit with candy! I let him go a little crazy that night but then pace himself with all that’s left over the next few weeks.”

I look forward to making Halloween cookies and mud pie cemeteries. My mom always made holidays so special in our family – she says ‘Life is all about memories.’ I want to create the same atmosphere and excitement for my kids growing up!”

My daughter doesn’t seem to have a sweet tooth yet. She loves everything savory, so we’re trying veggie chips. We’ll see how long that lasts!”
