Carson Daly Opens Up About Losing His Dad at 5

Carson Daly was just 5 when his dad, Jim, died of bladder cancer. Now, 45, The Voice host reveals that losing his father at a young age caused him to “take the parenting role very seriously.”

For starters, when Daly is in Los Angeles filming the hit NBC singing competition, he flies home to New York as soon as he gets the chance. “I don’t stick around to play golf or see friends,” Today’s Orange Room host told Us Weekly on Thursday, September 6. “I just want to get back to my family.”

Though it’s hard for the TV personality to be away from his wife, Siri Pinter, and their children Jackson, 9, Etta, 6, and London, 4, he has found ways to ease the homesickness. “My phone is littered with little singing videos, projects and dance parties!” Daly told Us

When shooting Today, Daly wakes up at 4 a.m. to be at Rockefeller Plaza. But he’s not complaining. The gig allows Daly to be there when the kids get home from school, which he admits “is great.”

Jackson, Etta and London have been a bright spot in the former MTV VJ’s life. His beloved stepfather, Richard Caruso, passed away in October 2017, a little over a month after his mother, Pattie Daly Caruso, died of a heart attack.

“Pops passed away today with absolute dignity & pride,” Carson wrote on Instagram at the time. “The greatest man we ever knew. Our hero. He exemplified great faith, loyalty to family & hard work. He provided us all with so much. We’re grateful. His legacy lives on in all of us & anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.”

The Voice premieres on Monday, September 24, on NBC at 8 p.m. ET
