Ben Affleck has been doing a lot of opening up while on the promotional tour for his new movie, The Way Back. As much as we are drawn to the confessional nature of his interviews about his alcoholism and his own father, we like to read about some bright spots in his life too. In particular, we love what he told People about how he co-parents with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
“I’m very grateful and respectful of her,” Affleck told the magazine of Garner, from whom he split in 2015 and divorced in 2018. “Our marriage didn’t work, and that’s difficult. Both of us really believe that it’s important for kids to see their parents respect one another and get along, whether they’re together or not.”
That’s not always easy for two people going through a divorce to do, but it echoes what the experts say about what’s best for kids when their parents are fighting. While they don’t recommend hiding arguments from children, they do say parents should never degrade each other in front of them.
“It’s important for my kids to know that I respect and care about Jen, and she treats me the same way,” Affleck said in the People interview. “I have a lot of respect and gratitude toward her. And I wish her the very best.”
As the son of divorced parents, Affleck said he knew that the split would be painful for Violet, Seraphina, and Sam. The exes have gone above and beyond merely showing their respect, however. Garner has famously helped Affleck through his battles with alcoholism, and despite their troubles, they’re often photographed together at events and outings with their children.
“When you have children with somebody, you’re connected to them forever,” he said.
We love how all these celeb parents are co-parenting together.
