Meghan Markle may now be happily married to Prince Harry, but it’s taken her a few tries at love before finding her royal soulmate. She’s been linked to a few other men in the past, one of whom she even got married to. Here’s every man from Markle’s love life, up until becoming the Duchess of Sussex.

It’s hard to imagine Markle being married to anyone but Prince Harry, but she did walk down the aisle once before. She wed film producer and manager, Trevor Engelson, in September 2011. According to the Daily Mirror, their wedding took place in Ocho Rios, Jamaica — including “an enormous four-day bash in a luxurious resort.”
Markle and Engelson dated for six years before their 2010 engagement. However, after just two years of marriage, they decided to call it quits in September 2013. The couple’s divorce cites “irreconcilable differences,” but sources have claimed it was due to issues involving their long-distance relationship. They’d gotten married just after finding out she landed her role on Suits, forcing her to move to Toronto from Los Angeles.
Their split reportedly came as a total surprise to Engelson. An excerpt from Andrew Morton’s biography on Markle, Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, detailed how their divorce went down.
“A wealthy entrepreneur friend claimed the marriage ended so abruptly that Meghan sent her wedding and engagement rings back to Trevor by registered post,” according to Morton. “Another confirmed that the decision to end the marriage was made by Meghan and that it had come ‘totally out of the blue.’”
Rory McIlroy
Following the demise of her first marriage, rumors circulated that Markle may have had a brief relationship with Irish golfer Rory McIlroy. In August 2014, McIlroy help Markle film an Ice Bucket Challenge. They were also once seen out at dinner together in Dublin, which raised suspicions about their status. However, nothing more came out of their relationship, so it was either a brief fling or they were just friends.
Cory Vitiello
Markle moved on to a more serious relationship with Canadian celebrity chef Cory Vitiello. They’re linked back to 2014, as Markle once wrote a profile on Vitiello on her since-deleted blog, The Tig. According to social media, it seems they were together for about two years. In March 2016, Vitiello called Markle “my lady” while tweeting about her accomplishments: “So proud of my lady @meghanmarkle being named Global Ambassador for @worldvision #worldwaterday.”
They also spent time together at the Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards in April 2016 — not long before meeting Prince Harry.

Finally, Markle met her prince. She and Harry were set up on a blind date in July 2016 by a mutual friend (some believe it was fashion designer Misha Nonoo, though E! News confirmed it was Violet von Westenholz). Markle only had one question before the date. She admitted in a BBC interview, “I didn’t know much about him, so the only thing that I had asked [our mutual friend] when she said that she wanted to set us up, was, ‘Well is he nice?’ Cause if he wasn’t kind, it just didn’t seem like it would make sense.”
Luckily, the two hit it off. After dating for over a year, they made their first public appearance as a couple in October 2017 at the Invictus Games. Their whirlwind romance was made official just one month later by announcing their engagement, and then tying the knot on May 19, 2018 — turning Markle into royalty as the Duchess of Sussex.
