Not surprisingly, Meghan (née Markle), the pregnant Duchess of Sussex, and her husband, Prince Harry, fielded endless baby name suggestions during their recent royal tour to Australia.
“My son Harry tells me that during their recent tour of Australia he and his wife were offered… thoughtful suggestions for the naming of their baby,” Charles said. “Just between us, I suspect Kylie and Shane made the cut. I would not hold your breath for Edna or Les.”
In the U.K., bookies are taking bets on what the baby’s name will be, and the odds are on a (ho-hum) classic royal name such as Arthur, Albert or Victoria. Diana, Harry’s deceased mother’s name, is also riding high in betting circles.
But Meghan and Harry’s baby will be seventh in line for the throne, a nice, safe distance that may perhaps allow more creativity when it comes to names.
“The further down the line of succession, the more likely you are to have a more unique or untraditional name,” Carolyn Harris, royal expert and author of Raising Royalty: 1,000 Years of Royal Parenting, told Vogue Australia.
Harris observed, “We see, from the diversity of names among the Queen’s descendants, that the Queen does seem willing to allow the descendants to choose their own names.”
The royal family is (not-so-) secretly fond of pet names, however. Vogue reports the queen was often called Lilibet growing up. Prince Philip calls his wife Cabbage (and according to others, Sausage). How romantic! We’re thinking the queen might prefer Gan-Gan, the moniker Duchess Catherine of Cambridge (aka Kate Middleton) says Prince George calls his great-grandmother Elizabeth.
But back to the royal baby on the way. Sadly, we’re not even close to first in the line of succession for knowing the baby’s name. Meghan and Harry, reportedly both quite close to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, are expected to honor royal protocol and tell her first to get her royal stamp of approval. Likely, we will hear the name a few days after the birth, after senior members of the royal family are told.
We admit it. We’re kind of hoping for a real curveball. Maybe not Kylie, though.
