90 Day Fiance star Paola “Pao” Mayfield sent fans into a frenzy when she showed off her new bleach blonde hair on Instagram. Many were concerned that the 31-year-old, who is pregnant with her first child, had endangered her unborn baby. As one person wrote: “Lay off the hair treatments (chemicals) when you’re pregnant, fool I’m a male and I know this.”
Turns out the Columbia native is still a brunette. “It is a wig 100% human hair,” Pao announced in the comments section of a Tuesday, November 20, Instagram post. “I don’t wash her often because it is not necessary.”
The fitness model also had a message for her critics. “Those who spend their time looking for the faults in others, usually spend no time correcting their own,” Pao captioned Tuesday’s Instagram, in which she is seen wearing her wig and a tiny” bikini top.
According to Dr. Daniel Roshan, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist based in New York City, women can absolutely color their hair while pregnant. “Most products are FDA approved and safe,” Dr. Roshan told Us Weekly. Plus, the American Pregnancy Association states on its website that chemicals found in dyes are not “highly” toxic and are safe for expecting moms to use.
Pao and her husband, Russ Mayfield, shared their pregnancy news exclusively with Us Weekly in July.
“This is the most amazing feeling ever! We can’t believe we are going to be parents — we are already so in love with our baby,” they told Us that month. “We are ready for this new adventure and we know it will bring us closer together.”
The Oklahoma-based couple, who tied the knot in October 2013, previously suffered a miscarriage.
