Jasmines are evergreen or deciduous climbers with twining stems. They can be summer or winter flowering plants with white or yellow flowers. Occasionally Jasmines will issue red or pink star-shaped flowers. Express.co.uk has compiled a list of tips to maintain a perfect garden when it comes to your jasmine plant.

Jasmine plants are often grown for their intense scent and beautiful bright yellow and white flowers which cover the vines.

There are several different species of jasmine – they can be climbers or shrubs.

These garden plants are recognisable by their fragrant flowers and pretty flowers.

Often jasmine is easy to grow and flowers in spring, summer or winter depending on the species.

How to grow jasmine

Jasmines need fertile, well-drained soil in sunny areas or partial shade.

These plants are not all fully hardy and therefore some will need to be grown indoors or in a very sheltered, frost-free area.

Different types of jasmine need planting differently, but as a general rule, summer jasmine should be planted in spring or autumn.

Winter jasmine should be planted in the autumn or winter seasons.

Jasmines are extremely easy to plant.

They are often sold in containers ready to be planted straight into borders or large containers.

These plants should be fed weekly with a high potash fertiliser in the summer.

Gardeners should also mulch jasmine plants in autumn with well-rotted manure or leaf mould.

When to cut back jasmine?

You should prune jasmine plants annually to keep them in a healthy and robust condition.

To cut back the plant effectively, you should wait until the flowers are lower down where their scent can be enjoyed.

Pruning is also necessary to keep them within their allotted space and prevent the growth from becoming too straggly, tangled or congested.

You should also take steps to prune summer jasmines right after flowering in the late summer or early autumn period.

Make sure to cut back flowered stems to a strong side-shoot lower down.

Thin out any overcrowded, damaged or wayward shoots and also remove any weak or thin stems.

Pruning summer jasmines after flowering give the new growth time to mature and flower early next season.

Winter jasmine should be cut back in spring – immediately after flowering.

If your jasmine has become overgrown, you can cut it back using hard pruning and renovation.

You should try to cut it back hard within two feet of the base.

The plant’s regrowth will be vigorous, so select strong shoots for training it into a new framework.

Take steps to remove any unwanted shoots at this time.

Jasmines will usually take two or three years to start flowering again.
