Marilyn (Emily Symons) and John (Shane Withington) have recently been forced to confront the reality that their marriage is over, and John has realised that his wife is remaining in their home to care for him following his stroke due to a sense of duty – not the love a spouse would feel.
After admitting that she no longer loves him, Marilyn realises it is she who would have to leave, as the house is set up for John’s needs during rehabilitation. Roo (Georgie Parker) says she can stay with her at Alf’s (Ray Meagher) place, but Marilyn’s pride means she turns her friend down.
Marilyn continues to evade her reality, deciding that she will tell John there’s no need for her to leave while he needs someone at home in case he needs help at night when Amber (Madeleine Jevic) isn’t around. However, Amber equips John with an alert watch so he can access help if he falls – which means Marilyn has no choice but to leave.
When Alf comes back from Evan’s (Cameron Daddo) funeral with Roo and Ryder (Lukas Radovich), he senses that Marilyn is not her usual self at the Diner. She refuses to admit that anything is wrong, and so he and Justin (James Stewart) go to visit John so they can find out the truth.
John realises that nobody knows Marilyn has moved out, and tells them she is living in a motel. Alf immediately goes to Marilyn and confronts her about the situation. Marilyn breaks down and admits she’s so lonely now; struggling with her new normal. Alf tells her she needs to move in with him, Roo and Ryder, but will she accept the help she needs?
