Triple action ‘super pill’ to transform high blood pressure treatment

A triple action “super pill” will transform the treatment of high blood pressure , say scientists.

Around 20% more patients will benefit from the medication, which combines three existing drugs in small doses.

A trial showed 70% taking the single pill reached blood pressure targets compared to just over half receiving normal multi-pill care.

One in four Brits suffer high blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Dr Ruth Webster, of The George Institute for Global Health, which carried out the trial, said “It’s estimated more than a billion people globally suffer from high blood pressure.

“Our results could help tens of millions of people reduce their blood pressure and reduce associated risks.”

The NHS currently has five different types of drugs it prescribes if blood pressure is consistently above 140/90.

Patients begin treatment with one drug at low dose, which is increased over time with additional drugs added and increased in dosage.

Higher doses increase the chances of side effects such as swollen ankles, dizziness and headaches.

But the trial on 700 patients in Sri Lanka found the new pill, made of a calcium channel blocker, angiotensin-2 receptor blockers and a diuretic, more effective.

Dr Webster added: “This new approach is much simpler and it works.”

Researchers are now investigating the cost effectiveness of the new triple pill.
