Lena Dunham has let her Instagram followers know she is "happy, joyous and free", sharing a "before and after" style social media post boasting of her post-health scare weight gain on Tuesday.
The Girls creator and actor, who has endometriosis and revealed she had a total hysterectomy to treat the condition in a Vogue column earlier this year, said she had gained 24 lbs (10.88 kg).
Dunham posted a paparazzi picture taken on herself on set at Brooklyn's Coney Island in April 2017 alongside a recent paparazzi picture of herself about town with her pet Yorkie, Bowie.
"On the left: 138 pounds, complimented all day and propositioned by men and on the cover of a tabloid about diets that work," she captioned the image. "Also, sick in the tissue and in the head and subsisting only on small amounts of sugar, tons of caffeine and a purse pharmacy."
The 32-year-old continued, "On the right: 162 pounds, happy joyous & free, complimented only by people that matter for reasons that matter, subsisting on a steady flow of fun/healthy snacks and apps and entrees, strong from lifting dogs and spirits."
However, the actor, who described herself as an "OG body positivity warrior", admitted that she does look "longingly" at the picture of her thinner self.
"Until I remember the impossible pain that brought me there and onto my proverbial knees."
Writing in the March 2018 issue of US Vogue, Dunham, who separated from partner Jack Antonoff earlier this year, said she elected to have a total hysterectomy to attempt to relieve her endometriosis after "years of complex surgeries".
A year earlier, Dunham had told subscribers to her Lenny email newsletter she had undergone five surgeries in 12 months.
The actor was hospitalised while attending the 2017 Met Gala, suffering complications from a surgery.
"I… want to remind all the women suffering from chronic illness that we aren't weak – quite the opposite, actually," Dunham wrote on Instagram at the time.
In addition to her frankness about her health struggles, Dunham has become known for her rejection of Hollywood's beauty and body standards.
In April, she wrote for Vogue about her decision to not "fix" her teeth with veneers or a whitening treatment, after a former publicist suggested she do so.
"I feel deeply that it is our differences that unite us; that it is the strange details of our faces that make us so totally human," she wrote. "If the mouth is a third window to the soul, then I want mine to look like someone has punched their way through it in a mad rage."
