If your man has seemed a little, um, uninterested in what you’ve been offering in the bedroom lately, a surprising source may be to blame: his intense workouts.
According to new research published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the intensity and duration of a guy’s workout routine is linked to changes in his sex drive.
For the February 2017 study, University of North Carolina (UNC) researchers quizzed nearly 1,100 guys at multiple gyms about their sex lives, exercise routines, general health, and medical histories. The study authors then compared these results to reported exercise intensity, workout duration, and sex drive.
Ultimately, the researchers found that men who followed shorter or moderate- to light-intensity exercise routines were more likely to have higher libidos than men who followed longer or high-intensity routines.
What gives? The researchers aren’t entirely sure why this link exists, but lead author Anthony Hackney, PhD, professor of exercise physiology and nutrition at UNC, told The New York Times that post-workout exhaustion and decreased testosterone levels might contribute to drops in libido. (In a separate 2005 review of studies, Dr. Hackney suggested that a man’s testosterone levels might decrease after long-duration endurance exercise.)
Of course, this study doesn’t prove that strenuous exercise actually causes low sex drive, and men shouldn’t stop exercising entirely just to boost their buzz in the bedroom. But if your man seems to be more interested in the gym than you these days and that’s becoming problematic, he might want to try taking his super-intense workout routine down a notch — especially if you’re trying to get pregnant.
“Fertility specialists will often ask a woman about whether and how much she exercises,” Dr. Hackney told the Times. “Based on our data, we think they should also be asking the man.”
On the flip side, if your guy has been a little too eager in the bedroom lately, you could always suggest he hit the gym. *wink*
