It is a plant-based carbohydrate that reaches the large colon in the body as it’s not digested.
Dietary fibre is found in many fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes.
According to the British Nutrition Foundation, the recommended intake of fibre for adults should be 30g per day.
When you don’t consume enough fibre you will feel sensations of feeling bloated, hunger right after eating, crashing from a sudden sugar high, putting on weight and high cholesterol.
Glucomannan is a popular dietary fibre and is usually made from the root of the konjac plant.
Holland and Barrett gave detail on what exactly it is, and explained: “It is a natural, water-soluble fibre, traditionally used by the Chinese to detoxify.
“It helps maintain weight by creating a sensation of fullness, delays stomach emptying, breaks down carbohydrates slower and decreases the absorption of fat.”
“It’s often used as a bulking agent in foods and is available in capsules and powder which is added to some diet foods such as pastas and noodles.”
Glucomannan absorbs water in the stomach and intestine forming a bulky fibre which aids in constipation. It also helps slow down the absorption of sugar and cholesterol which controls sugar levels in diabetes.
A dose of 2-4g per day is recommended and is advised to be taken 15 minutes before mealtime.
Possible side effects include:
- Soft stools
In a 2007 study by the British Nutrition Foundation concluded the research into the effects of different types of fibre on the appetite and food intake was inconsistent, yet there was ample evidence that consuming high-fibre foods may decrease feelings of hunger.
