Best supplements for high blood pressure – 1p-a-day capsules to prevent hypertension

High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than 25 per cent of all adults in the UK. But you could lower your risk of developing hypertension by simply taking daily calcium supplements, it’s been claimed.

Hypertension puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

Eating an unhealthy diet or not doing enough regular exercise could be raising your chances of high blood pressure.

But, you could lower your chances of developing the condition by taking supplements, scientists have claimed.

One of the most effective natural remedies for high blood pressure is calcium supplements, according to nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.

Adding more calcium to your diet helps the body to get rid of excess sodium, she said.

Too much sodium increases your chances of high blood pressure.

Calcium also helps to regulate the dilation and contraction of blood vessels.

Taking daily calcium supplements could lower your blood pressure by as much as 2.6/1.3mmHg, added the nutritionist.

“Around 99 per cent of absorbed calcium goes straight to your bones,” she wrote on her website, MyLowerBloodPressure.com.

“The other one per cent plays a vital role in regulating blood pressure, blood clotting, muscle contraction, nerve impulses and energy production.

“Calcium tablets are best taken with meals. They are also better taken with an evening meal as calcium movements and usage in the body is greatest at night, when growth hormone is secreted.

“The easiest way to increase your calcium intake is to drink an extra pint of milk per day, which provides around 720mg calcium per pint.”

If you choose to add more calcium to your diet by drinking milk, you should consider using skimmed milk, she added.

It provides just as much calcium as whole milk, but without the added fat or calories.

If you’re not a big fan of milk, you could try eating more broccoli.

Broccoli is a really good source of the nutrient, while you could also add more kale or romanesco to your diet.
