Bed bugs might be something other people in other countries have to worry about, however, there are a surprising number of people experiencing the nasty critters in the UK. Spotting them is extremely difficult due to their size but smelling this odour could be a strong indicator you may have an infestation.

Bed bugs are small, oval insects which live on the blood of animals or humans.
Bed bugs do not fly and move very quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings.
The adult bed bug tends to have flat bodies which are about the size of an apple seed
After bed bugs have fed, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish colour, they also emit a distinctive smell.
The scent gland of bed bugs produces a musty odour which is often described as smelling similar to coriander.
The smell is distinctly not a pleasant odour and is noticing a new and unusual odour wafting in your bedroom, it could be a warning you may have a bed bug infestation.
If you have an infestation of bed bugs you may begin to notice your home smells similar to mouldy shoes or wet, mouldy clothes.
Why do beg bugs have a distinctive odour about them?
Terminix said: “Like many species of bugs, bed bugs release odours called alarm pheromones.
“When a group of bed bugs gets disturbed, you may be able to smell that odour.
“Odours may also result from bed bug faecal matter.
“The odour is described many different ways and has been compared to the smell of coriander, an herb.
“Older publications even refer to the bed bug as the coriander bug with others describing the smell as sweet or musty.”

Can having bed bugs make you feel sick?
“Bed bugs are not considered a medical or public health hazard.
“While bed bugs are commonly associated with poor hygiene habits, the truth is, everyone is susceptible to a bed bug infestation.
“Bed bugs are particularly drawn to large cities due to the increased number of human blood meals in close proximity to one another.
“But can you get sic form bed bugs? Not directly.
“While scientists have shown that bed bugs are capable of carrying human pathogens, no evidence has revealed that they have the ability to pass those pathogens on through bites.”
Other signs you may have bed bugs?
Other signs of a possible infestation include blood stains on the sheets or pillowcases, dark or rusty spots of bed bug excrement on sheets and mattresses, bed clothes and walls or bed bug faecal spots, eggs shells or shed skins in areas where bed bugs hide.
If a person suspects an infestation of bed bugs, its important to remove all bedding and check it carefully for signs of the bugs or their excrement.
Remove the dust cover over the bottom of the box springs and examine the seams in the wood framing.
Peel back the fabric where its stapled to the wood frame.
