All drinks, especially night club lovers – at some point or other – have left a night out feeling equal parts ridiculously ravenous and desperate to prevent the imminent hangover.
We all know, deep down, that drunk people will eat pretty much anything as long as it’s hot. But at the time, what you eat feels like it matters. And it kind of does.
We all have our tips and tricks to try and subside both feelings.
My pal Dave practically inhales a banana and a Diaralyte moments after ending a night out in an attempt to settle himself. And I’ve always been personally convinced that nothing can ever harm me if I have a black pudding and bacon sandwich and a McDonald’s milkshake between leaving the club and going to bed.
Whatever your choice of post-party food ritual, it’s usually based on myths, hunches and old wives tales – or simply what your drunk brain is telling you to munch on.
But now, thanks to a new survey, we know the answers for certain.
1,500 pub-goers have spoken in a new survey by plant-based food brand Squeaky Bean, telling all about the best food to eat on a night out. Some of it’s to cure a hangover, other options are to soak up the booze and make the journey home a bit easier, and others are just too tasty to pass up on.
Doner kebab
That’s right, the mighty kebab has been hailed the king of night out foods, and that’s good going considering there seems to be a kebab shop within walking distance of every place that sells alcohol.
The pitta part of the kebab is a proper booze soaker, helping you sober up (just a little bit) and waiving some of the intensity from your upcoming hangover.
The rest of the doner kebab – salad, delicious greasy meat and the sauce of your choice – are just a bonus.
Cheesy chips
According to the survey, cheesy chips are among the best night out snacks too. The best part about this one is you can add it to the first option. Who doesn’t love a doner kebab with a side of cheesy chips? Throw some garlic mayonnaise on there too while you’re at it.
Burger
Don’t fancy a kebab? Keep hold of your cheesy chips and swap the kebab out for a burger. Simple. Understated. Delicious.
A burger has the power to make you feel like the life is returning to your body when you’ve gone a bit overboard on a night out (we’ve all been there).
Chips and curry sauce
Chips and curry sauce is an absolute staple drunk food and one of the rare drunk foods that’s acceptable to eat in the sober cold light of day. In fact, smothering them in curry sauce might be the only real, right way to consume chips. Especially while drunk.
It’s hard to explain why chips and curry sauce works when you’re drunk. It just does. You don’t question it.
It’s a magical combination that makes you feel warm, like someone’s hugging you from the inside, and the carbs soak up some of the alcohol so you can wake up the next morning feeling a bit less like you’ve been hit with a spade.
Crispy fried chicken
Crispy fried chicken is a versatile drunk food. With it being beer’s best pal, you can drink it while you get drunk, or afterwards. Or both if you’ve got the room (and the cash).
There’s not much information from the survey as to why people love fried chicken so much and why it works for a sobering snack on the way home from a night out, but it might be that eating fried chicken involves so many of your senses.
You can smell a fried chicken shop from a mile away, and eating it involves crunchiness, tenderness and greasiness. Maybe all those senses simply set your brain from smashed to a tiny bit less smashed, guiding you home and into your post-drinking slumber.
Supermarket pizza
While most people like to pick up something fried and greasy as a matter of urgency on the way home from a shindig, the survey shows one in 10 prefer to pop a supermarket pizza or frozen chips in the oven once indoors. That might be true, but does require you to be a little more organised and get these in your house ahead of the night out.
And surprisingly, when it comes to which pizza to bake off, almost one in five participants reckon a simple Margherita pizza hits the spot. That’s right, the pizza that has no toppings. Maybe cheese is the real winner here?
Cheese toasties, or many a butty
It must be, as 13% of British drinkers crave a cheese toastie when they get the munchies after a night out.
Another 15% of post-pubgoers enjoy a chip butty, with the bacon butty just a few places behind. Maybe wrapping all three into one sandwich would create a new, ultimate kind of drunk food?
Now you know which foods to hunt down on the way home from a night out (or pop in your fridge for future drunk you to cook) that will perfectly hit the spot.
