Food recalls: Expert explains how they work
Tesco is recalling a popular cereal because there are two undeclared ingredients not mentioned on the label. The supermarket and Food Standards Agency (FSA) have both outlined what customers should do if they have purchased the product.
Product details
Tesco Free From Bran Flakes
Pack size: 300g
Best before: May 26, 2024
The FSA explained: “Tesco is recalling Tesco Free From Bran Flakes because some packs may contain a small amount of another cereal variant (chocolate pillows) that contain milk and hazelnut (nuts) which are not mentioned on the label.
“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or an allergy to hazelnut (nuts).”
The agency issued a risk statement regarding the recent recall: “This product may contain milk and hazelnut (nuts) making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or an allergy to hazelnut (nuts).”
The FSA also outlined the action Tesco has taken to ensure the safety of its shoppers.

“Tesco is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.
“The company has also issued a recall notice to its customers.
“These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”
The notice read: We have been made aware that some packs of Tesco Free From Bran Flakes 300g may contain a small amount of another variant of cereal (chocolate pillows), which contains milk and hazelnut.
“This is not declared on the Tesco Free From Bran Flakes 300g packaging and therefore the product could pose a safety risk to those people with an allergy or intolerance to milk and / or nuts.”
Tesco told customers: “Please do not consume this product if you have an allergy to milk and / or hazelnuts, return the affected product to store where a full refund will be given. No receipt is required.”
Tesco apologised for any inconvenience caused and urged customers to contact Customer Services for further information. The UK number is 0800 505 555, the ROI number is 1800 248 123.
The FSA echoed Tesco’s advice: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or an allergy to hazelnut (nuts) do not eat it.
“Instead, return it to a Tesco store for a full refund, no receipt is required. For further details please contact Tesco customer services on 0800 505 555.”
Food recalls are not very common, but they must be taken seriously when they occur.
The FSA said: “Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold.
“Then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).
“Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk.
“When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”
