Queen Camilla shares strict food rule she had to obey as a child

Queen Camilla probably makes her own decisions regarding what she eats now, but as a child she was expected to follow an essential rule at mealtimes.

Many parents tell their children that they cannot have dessert until after they have finished dinner, and in the now Queen’s household this was no different.

Camilla told Tom Parker Bowles, a food critic, food writer – and her son – about the food rule she had to follow as a child in conversation with You Magazine.

She said: “We always had to finish what was on our plate before we ate pudding.”

However, she wasn’t a lover of all desserts, divulging which treat she absolutely was not a fan of.

She said: “That wasn’t such a problem when it was rice pudding as I hated the stuff.”

Queen Camilla shared another insight about her relationship with food and cooking as a child.

She revealed: “I grew up in a very happy home, with good food at its heart.

“I still just about remember rationing, but we grew everything from tomatoes and melons to peas, beans, carrots and new potatoes. One of my earliest memories is podding those peas and beans with my mother, an accomplished cook.”

This is something young Camilla had in common with Prince William and Kate, Princess of Wales’ family.

Back in 2019, Kate told Mary Berry: “We grow our own vegetables, we’ve got carrots, beans, beetroot’s a massive favourite, Louis absolutely loves beetroot.”

While little Louis loves beetroot, Princess Charlotte is a big fan of Charlotte potatoes – “obviously” – plus another unexpected snack that has an acquired taste.

In the same interview, Camilla spoke about the one food she eats almost daily – although she was not a fan at first.

She recalled being “excited” when she first tried prawn and avocado at Alexander’s in Chelsea – “the combination seemed impossibly exotic”.

The Queen added: “I’d eaten avocados at home and hated them at first. But I now eat them most days.”
