The Magnum White Chocolate ice cream tubs have been recalled by Unilever UK Ltd, after it was revealed that they contain milk that isn’t declared on the label in English.

The ice cream ingredients have been incorrectly written on the label in Italian, making them potentially unsafe for those who won’t spot the allergen.

The company is urging customers not to eat the product and to contact them for details of how to return it.

The recall applies to specific batches of the popular white chocolate ice cream.

Other flavours of the ice cream, and other products in the range, are not affected by the recall.

The affected batch numbers are L9255AT138 and L9255BT138, and it is only the 440ml tubs that are being recalled.

Customers should check the rim of the ice cream tub lid to find the details and to check if the item has an end date of September 2021.

If the details match up, shoppers should contact the Unilever Careline on  0800 146252 or email [email protected].

All shoppers should check their ice creams, but it’s especially important for anyone who has an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.

In a statement, Magnum said: “Magnum is taking the precautionary measure of recalling a limited number of

Magnum White ice cream (440ml) due to the potential undeclared presence of milk, as the product has been incorrectly labelled with the Italian back of pack label.

“We can confirm that no other Magnum products are affected.”

The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers to inform them of the recall.

The notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought one of the tubs.

Unilever has also contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall in order to spread the word.

Milk can be dangerous for anyone with an allergy or intolerance, causing digestive issues and even breathing problems in more severe cases.

Unilever commented: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience and concern caused and thank everyone for their co-operation.”

Allergy alerts are issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) when products are discovered to have a problem which means they shouldn’t be sold.

Products can either be withdrawn and taken off the shelves, or recalled where customers are asked to return their items.

Often, as in this case, it’s due to a risk of allergy due to missing or incorrect information on the labelling.

Allergens must always be highlighted on food packaging in order to protect customers and warn them of the health risks.
