No sun but all the style: best dressed contenders step out for day three of Punchestown

It’s not quite as sunny as yesterday at the Punchestown festival but the crowds are steadily coming through the gates as racing commences for a third day in Co Kildare.

True to form, there has been plenty of contenders for the best dressed lady competition.

Neighbours Triona Doherty, Regina Stapleton, and Aisling O’Rourke from nearby Straffan were out for the day with their other halves, an annual tradition for them.

“We are neighbours we share a table every year,” said Regina, who was working a red power suit with a leopard print and red head-piece.

“We all got our hats in Hats Amore in Newbridge,” she said.

Her sharp tailoured two-piece she has had in the wardrobe for awhile, giving it a new lease of life with different shoes and her snazzy hat.

“It’s vintage at this stage, I am comfortable in it I have worn it to the races a few times. With a different hat and shoes you’re good to go,” she said.

Yesterday evening there were emotional scenes when legend of the game Ruby Walsh called time on his days in the saddle.

The 39-year-old who had 2,700 winners over an illustrious career was supposed to be racing today before his surprise announcement after pipping Al Boum Photo to the post in the Gold Cup on Kemboy.

He will be replaced today by Paul Townend, Patrick Mullins, Bryan Cooper, David Mullins and Robbie Power.

As for star power, Vogue Williams is back on Irish soil for a day at the course.
