I'm a professional piercer – what your jewellery style says about you from brow bolts, simple studs and nose rings

WHEN it comes to making a statement with our look, a new piercing can be a bold and exciting change.

There are so many jewellery styles to choose from, and whether it's your ears, nose or even your nipple – where you choose to place your body art also creates a lasting impression.

Professional body piercer and tattoo artist Elle Rose says: "Just like my clients, the piercings they choose and the jewellery they choose varies drastically.

"Obviously, there’s many different reasons people choose a particular piercing, however we do tend to notice trends in the type of people having certain things done.

"I absolutely love piercing. I especially love the creative freedom I get when curating ears, and the satisfaction of performing an aesthetically pleasing piercing and the confidence a well-placed piercing can give a person."

But what does your piercing say about you? Here, Elle – who owns Ellerose Piercing and Tattoo in Colchester, Essex – reveals all…

Nose and septum

Nostril and septum piercings are also very popular currently, particularly with students, both male and female, who are more likely to choose hoops.

There’s been a rise recently in more mature ladies getting nostril piercings and again, they tend to go for a more understated style, usually a tiny sparkly gem.

Nipple

Surprisingly common and generally more so amongst professionals of all ages (eg doctors, teachers and the like) who are reluctant to or can't have visible or less traditional piercings.

It seems this is a way to express their wild and outrageous side without impacting on their status in life.

You’d be amazed at how many people are hiding a little metal secret under their clothing!

Belly button

Navel piercings have always been popular with young teen girls for as long as I can remember.

It is as popular now as it has always been and I don’t see that ever changing.

Ever since I was teen, a navel piercing was almost the uniform of the 14 year old female!

The only thing that’s changed there is the jewellery, with girls opting for a banana bar over a ring these days.

Eyebrows

We find eyebrow piercings to be more popular with men.

A lot of older males are getting them at the moment, possibly in an attempt to regain or reclaim their youth perhaps?

All in the detail

Theres been a huge rise in popularity recently of the curated ear [multiple piercings in one ear].

Older more mature ladies, who have a little extra disposable income and who take pride in their appearance, are opting for this and tend to choose solid gold jewellery in classic, understated but eye-catching styles.

Younger women in their mid twenties upwards are more likely to choose dainty and sparkly designs also but often in either white gold, rose gold or titanium.

They generally go for something more edgy,  for example mismatched studs, lots of hoops or more unusual designs like little skulls.
