Flapjack recipe: How to make in 4 simple steps

Flapjacks are one of those foods that almost everyone loves are the perfect addition to bring to any potluck, or summer picnic.

But rather than buy ready made ones from the supermarket why not give this a personal touch by making your own?

What are flapjacks?

Not to be confused with the American flapjack, which is actually a pancake, the traditional British flapjack is an extremely popular trayback.

Usually made from just four ingredients (although more can be added if you wish) it’s easy to make and is perfect for eating for breakfast, dessert or just as a snack with some tea or coffee.

Ingredients
125g butter, plus a little extra for greasing

125g brown sugar

2-3 tbsp of golden syrup (add more or less depending on taste and texture preference)

250g jumbo porridge oats or rolled oats

Method

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.
  2. Here you can either mix the four ingredients in a food processor OR you can combine the butter, syrup, and sugar in a saucepan and heat until dissolved, then you add the oats and mix well.
  3. Lightly butter a baking tray and add the mixture (the tray should ideally be about 20 x 20cm). Then bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  4. Leave to cool in the tin for about 5 minutes, then cut into separate bars and enjoy.

How long do flapjacks keep?

This depends on how they are stored, but if stored in a biscuit tin in a cool place (not the fridge) then they should last for about 2-3 weeks.

Are flapjacks gluten free?

Yes – all the ingredients used to make flapjacks are gluten free. Although if cooking for anyone with dietary restrictions we suggest double checking with the brand, as these may be packed on factories that do handle gluten products.
