But how do they measure up?
Harry Niazi owns Olley’s Fish Experience in South London, which is up for a gong at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2019.
NICK PRITCHARD asked him for his verdict on regular portions from fast food restaurants and to give each one a chip rating out of five.
FIVE GUYS – 124 chips in portion
“The portion is massive and the chips spill out of the cup and fill the bottom of the paper bag.
“Five Guys restaurants have a sign on their walls telling customers where the potatoes came from – mine were from Nottingham.
“I love the crispy skin which has been left on, which makes them a bit healthier as well.”
- PRICE: £4.75
- RATING: 5 stars
McDONALD'S – 59 chips in portion
“They are served in their iconic red and yellow cardboard packaging, sizzling hot and obviously straight from the fryer – a real bonus.
“They have a beautiful light colour, which shows they use fresh, clean oil. I like a French fry to be pale.
“The flavour is maybe a little bland because they are so thin, but they are nicely seasoned and have a really great texture.”
- PRICE: £1.09
- RATING: 3 1/2 stars
KFC – 54 chips in portion
“Despite having a new recipe these didn’t blow me away.
“While they are fluffy on the inside, they are not very crispy on the outside. I like a few little crunchy bits as a contrast to the soft, larger fries, but there are too many in this portion. If I wanted crisps I would buy a packet.
“They are saved by the taste. They have a lovely colour and I like that KFC now leaves the skin on.”
- PRICE: 99p
- RATING: 3 stars
SHAKE SHACK – 78 chips in portion
“The US brand’s signature side is its crinkle-cut fries. I can see these are greasy, with the bottom of the carton spotted with oily patches.
“You can taste the oil as well.
“They are super crispy, fluffy and have a good potato flavour, but the texture dominates this.”
- PRICE: £3
- RATING: 2 stars
NANDO'S – 39 chips in portion
“These are chunky – a little larger than you would find at most fast food places. So you can definitely call them chips, not fries.
“It is really east to tell that Nando’s uses a better potato than most of their competitors.
“I am impressed by the taste, you can savour the flavour of the spuds.”
- PRICE: £2.50
- RATING: 4 stars
BURGER KING – 40 chips in portion
“I was really impressed with these.
“The chips are really long and there aren’t too many small flaky fries in the bag.
“They are light in colour and well seasoned. They have a crispy exterior and a fluffy interior – textbook fries.
“Before I knew it, I had polished off the lot.”
- PRICE: £1.09
- RATING: 4 stars
