Tulisa says Jesy suffered in silence as X Factor blamed for not supporting her

Tulisa has shared her heartbreak at finding out about the abuse Jesy Nelson endured during her appearance on the X Factor .

The former N'Dubz singer had acted as mentor to Jesy and the other three members of Little Mix and worked closely with them as they became the first group to win the show.

But despite their bond, Tulisa said she had no idea Jesy was suffering in silence behind the scenes.

Jesy spoke about the extent of the bullying she received off the back of the ITV contest in documentary Odd One Out.

Jesy told she and her bandmates were told by X Factor producers to get on social media as they competed in the show – which opened her up to a barrage of abuse.

After winning the show Jesy said she went on Facebook to see over a hundred messages with the first one urging her, "Kill yourself."

The Little Mix singer decided to speak about her experiences, even though her mum begged her not to, so she could help others in a similar situation.

As the show went to air on Thursday night, her former mentor Tulisa praised her breavery.

Tulisa wrote: "What a brave, beautiful, talented and loved girl you are."

She went on: "Knowing you were going through all of this in silence breaks my heart but to see the person you have become, rise above the dark times and now be in a place to help others shows the world just how strong you have always been.

"I love  you Jesy," added Tulisa followed by a love heart.

In the documentary, Jesy told how she hid her depression from the public because she felt like she should be living her dream after winning the singing contest.

She told how Little Mix bosses encouraged her to take some time off but she was afraid to draw any more attention to herself.

It was during a return to X Factor stage in 2013 that trolling of Jesy reached new lows.

Jesy said her depression spiralled after reading mean tweets about her weight and appearance, including one from Katie Hopkins that called her a 'chubber.'

As the cameras filmed her meeting with a therapist, Jest admitted she can no longer watch footage from her time on X Factor and thinks of herself as a different person.

While Jesy's mum Janet admitted she wishes her daughter had never taken part on the show that made her famous.

"I always say I wish it was back to normal,” said Janet. "I wish I could have life as it was and have my funny little Jess back."

She went on: "If I could have my Jess back as she was before, I’d change it like that. Not have the X Factor or any of that. Because I miss her. I just kind of feel like I’ve lost Jess to social media. [She's] addicted to what people are saying."
