Tina Fey‘s not a normal writer, she’s a cool writer.
The “Mean Girls” star surprised the audience at the August Wilson Theater on Wednesday night to celebrate the movie-turned-Broadway-show’s inspired holiday, “Mean Girls Day.”
Plastic fans gushed over Jonathan Bennett, who took the stage before the show to read an official proclamation declaring October 3, 2018 “Mean Girls Day” in the state of New York. The real shock came when the actor introduced Fey.
“Everyone thought that was the big surprise of the night,” a theater-goer told Page Six of Bennett’s appearance on stage. “He’s the one who introduced Tina Fey, and that’s when the entire audience burst into cheers and standing ovations.”
Fey, who wrote and starred in the 2004 movie and also adapted it to the Broadway stage, spoke to the crowd about how the cult-favorite has taken on new meaning in 2018.
“To hear Tina speak about how the movie [and] play has translated into more of a movement for women’s empowerment and females in leadership roles was the most inspiring part,” we’re told. “You could feel the energy in the room as she spoke.”
Specifically when talking about Lindsay Lohan’s character, who’s storyline followed her path to self-discovery, Fey said, “be more like Cady in these troubling times.”
In addition to the official proclamation, W. 52nd St. was renamed “W. Fetch St.” in an unveiling ceremony with the help of Julie Menin, the commissioner of the mayor’s office of media and entertainment.
“In honor of ‘Mean Girls Day’ and the musical’s commitment to making world-class theater more accessible, the city is making fetch happen by renaming NYC’s historical West 52nd Street to West Fetch Street,” Menin said to fans.
