Steph McGovern left ‘blubbing’ by Bill Turnbull amid final appearance before baby arrives

Steph McGovern, 37, who recently announced she would be leaving her role on BBC Breakfast, spoke out in response to Bill Turnbull’s, 63, documentary about his cancer diagnosis. The former BBC Breakfast host spoke to his co-star and fellow cancer sufferer Sian Williams, 54, about their experiences with the disease in Bill Turnbull: Staying Alive, which aired on Channel 4 last night. Steph took to Twitter to share her thoughts on the programme ahead of her final TV appearance this evening, before embarking on maternity leave. Praising “broadcasting legends” Bill and Sian, the pregnant presenter retweeted an emotional clip from the documentary in view of her 380,000 followers.

Steph admitted the film made her shed a few tears as she added the caption: “Aww man, this has made me blub. 

“I owe a lot to broadcasting legends @billtu + @sianwilliams100.”(sic)

The star went on to pay tribute to her former editor on BBC Breakfast, who was also discussed in the documentary.

She added: “And our inspirational former Breakfast editor Alison, who they mention. 

“For anyone affected by cancer, and let’s face it who isn’t, this is a powerful watch.”

Just after her statement about Bill’s candid documentary, Steph informed fans she and her bump would be making their final appearance.

The journalist shared a link about her forthcoming stint on Have I Got News for You on the micro-blogging site and wrote: “Tonight 9pm on @BBCOne – bump’s final outing on the tellybox.

“I’m hosting ‘Have I Got News for You’.”

Fans took to the comments section of Steph’s post to share their excitement about her appearance on the panel show.

“Should be fun you’re always quite good value on that,” one viewer wrote.

Another added: “Good luck for tonight. Hope you have a nice relaxing time before baby arrives. Take care will be watching out for your great news xx.”

Elsewhere, Steph’s BBC Breakfast colleague Carol Kirkwood, 57, responded to her decision to leave the show.

In a lengthy statement about her exit, Steph reflected on her time on the programme and jokingly branded her co-stars “show offs”.

She wrote: “The most supportive of group of show-offs you’ll ever meet.

“Whatever is happening in each of our lives, we’ve covered for each other, fought for each other and of course regularly taken the mick out of each other too.”(sic)

In response to the statement, meteorologist Carol replied: “You have been a joy to work with babe. Will miss you.”

She added: “Remember your first day…. star quality from the word go. GOOD LUCK! Book me in for babysitting duties xxx.”(sic)

Have I Got News for You airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
