SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Esther McVey’s stylist primes her for ballot

SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Esther McVey employs Gulf War veteran to keep her hair ‘sexy and sassy’ as she gears up for Tory leadership race

Esther McVey, 51, is running in the Conservative Party leadership contest

Just in case you were not already aware, Tory leadership contender Esther McVey, 51, has a secret weapon — her hair. And the stylist in charge of her ‘sassy’ look is a former Gulf War veteran.

Mark Power, 51, has been popping round to the MP for Tatton every six weeks to primp up her blonde locks.

‘I’m not into big, bouncy blow-dries,’ he tells me. ‘I use straight lines in the cut to create a sexy, sassy look that will lie a lot softer, so she doesn’t need to blow-dry her hair every day.’

Power — who left the Army in 1992 after serving in the first Gulf War and then retrained as a hairstylist — counts the pop singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor among his former clients.

McVey (pictured) recently announced plans to marry fellow Tory MP Philip Davies.

‘She hasn’t asked me to style her hair yet [for her wedding day],’ says Power.

‘But, if she does, I would advise her to wear it up.’

Political upstart cries foul on Bullingdon Club double standard

Former PM David Cameron, who winced whenever reminded of his high-spirited days in the Bullingdon Club at Oxford, can count on sympathy from a fellow member of the exclusive university dining society.

Political tyro George Farmer, the 28-year-old son of Tory peer Lord Farmer and chairman of Turning Point UK, which champions free-market values at British universities, complains in next month’s Tatler magazine: ‘They never attack David Dimbleby for it — and he was a member, too.’

Pippa starts mums and bubs fitness classes

Pippa Middleton goes for a stroll with her seven-month old baby Arthur

Pippa Middleton has become a convert to mother-and-baby workout classes seven months after giving birth to her first child, Arthur.

‘I was a little sceptical before I tried baby barre,’ says the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister, 35, who is married to financier James Matthews.

‘I anticipated a room of crying babies, with little actual exercise for Mum. But my recent experience has been a pleasant surprise. The graceful ballet movements provide calming stimulation for babies and the additional weight — of your baby in a sling — means that mums reap the benefits of muscle activation and body sculpting.’

She adds: ‘The flowing hand gestures and soothing music mesmerised Arthur for a good 45 minutes, meaning that peace did reign for the plié.’
