Russell Crowe channels Gladiator’s Maximus as he RETURNS to Malta’s Fort Ricasoli where the iconic 2000 historical flick was filmed

Russell Crowe flexed his muscles and posed with his arms wide at Fort Ricasoli, where his 2000 film Gladiator was filmed, in Malta on Saturday.

The Australian actor, 57, was enjoying a bike ride in the Mediterranean country when he arrived at his old haunt which was used as a stand-in for Ancient Rome for the flick.

Russell seemed to be getting back into his iconic character of Maximus Decimus Meridius with the poses, while he wore black sports shorts and a T-shirt.

Last year, Crowe called making Gladiator ‘a unique experience,’ partly because, according to the actor, ‘the [initial] script that they had was so bad.’

‘It was just so bad,’ Russell continued. ‘It was like, Okay, ummm. Yeah.’

But the producer Crowe was speaking to at the time didn’t know he had seen an early version of the script, and succeeded in convincing the Insider star to still meet with Gladiator’s acclaimed director, Ridley Scott.

‘The producer didn’t know I’d actually already been able to get a copy,’ Crowe explained to Fallon. ‘But the thing he said was, “I don’t want to send you the document we have because you won’t respond to it.”

‘He said, “But, I want to encourage you to have a meeting with Ridley Scott, and here’s the thing that I want you to think about: it’s 180 AD, you’re a roman general and you’re being directed by Ridley Scott. Just think about that.”‘

The rest is history, as Russell shared that he and Ridley ‘clicked on that first meeting.’

The Les Miserables star has been in the country for production of Prizefighter: The Life of Jem Belcher.

While Matt Hookings and Ray Winstone are listed in the list of cast members of the biopic about 19th-century pugilist, Russell has been left off and it is not known what his role will be in the flick.

Filming for the new movie will also take place in the UK.

The protagonist leaves New York in 1967 to track down his childhood friends fighting in Vietnam to share a beer with them.

In the production, Thailand will serve in place of Vietnam.

The project is being directed by Peter Farrelly (Green Book), who also co-wrote the script with Brian Currie and Pete Jones.
