Ricky Gervais to increase tour security

Ricky Gervais ‘to massively increase security’ ahead of upcoming UK tour after ‘receiving death threats’ over his anti-woke jokes

Ricky Gervais is set to increase his security ahead of his UK tour after he received death threats following his anti-woke jokes, The Sun has revealed.

The English comedian’s team has now put a massive security overhaul into place for his upcoming UK tour Armageddon – which is set to kick off on Wednesday in Cardiff.

The After Life actor and director, 61, had already took action while touring in the US – as it was told to have a ‘ring of steel’ during his Hollywood-bowl gig amid fears of being shot.

The Office co-creator said his live show will discuss topics as the likes of God, Hitler and culture of offence.

A telly source told The Sun: ‘Ricky has been made aware threats have been made to his life. His offices haven’t shown them to him, but have told him very disturbing letters have come in for him.

‘Ricky is very aware of the dangers and he can afford whatever security he wants, so he thought it was a no-brainer,’ the source added.

It appeared as one of the very recent and most significant threats he received was caused by his comments on his Netflix special show SuperNature – where the comedian was hammered by LGBTQ+ activists for being ‘anti-trans’.

A source also revealed security combed the arena before the gig and were in the crowd.

Ricky’s concerns sparked also following last year’s attack on American comedian  Dave Chappelle – who was attacked on stage by a man carrying a replica handgun containing a blade.

The English comedian ranked in a whopping £1.41million at the Box Office for a single stand-up gig earlier in May.

The actor took to the stage at Los Angeles’ iconic Hollywood Bowl on May 6 as part of his Armageddon show, which he’s currently touring worldwide.

And after thrilling fans at the packed-out show, Ricky set an all-time record as it was the world’s highest-grossing single gig ever by a British stand-up comedian.

Ricky said of his incredible record: ‘To find out about this record is the icing on the cake. I was happy enough when it didn’t rain.’

The After Life actor had previously shared a series of tweets about his Hollywood Bowl show, sharing his pride at having performed at one of the most ‘surreal’ nights of his life.

He tweeted: ‘Thank you Hollywood Bowl for one of the most surreal nights of my life. What a venue. What a crowd.

‘I can’t even imagine what my mum would think about me playing the Hollywood Bowl. I hope she would be horrified by the language, tell me I looked fat, and be secretly proud.

‘Wish I’d filmed it now… if only to remind myself it actually happened. Mental.’

The star also took to Instagram to share a snap of the venue at night, captioning the image: ‘That time I played a packed out Hollywood F**king Bowl.’

Ricky’s post was garnered with plenty of positive messages from fans, many of whom were at the gig and thanked him for a great show.

Following his success, Ricky is set to continue touring Armageddon throughout the year, with huge shows lined-up across the UK, Europe and the US.

He kicks off with a gig at Cambridge’s Corn Exchange before heading over to Leeds then Manchester.

He’ll then take a short break before going over to Vienna followed by plenty of jetting back and forth from the US to the UK with shows in places including New York, Dublin, Cardiff and Toronto.

Meanwhile, in the autumn, he’ll play two massive gigs at the OVO Wembley Arena, while he’s also set for a 10-night run at the London Palladium.

The incredible sold-out tour, which kicked off last year, will conclude at Bristol Beacon in December.
