Liverpool were beaten at the death in Naples as Lorenzo Insigne struck a late winner for Napoli.
The Reds were on the back foot throughout and finally fell behind in the final minute as Insigne slid in from close range.
Liverpool were previously indebted to saves from goalkeeper Alisson and superb central defensive displays from both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez but could not secure the point that would have kept them top of Group C.
Insigne came closest for Napoli in the first period when he angled a drive wide of Alisson’s far post, while Gomez cleared a Jose Callejon effort off the line and substitute Dries Mertens hit the bar from close range late on.
At the other end, Mohamed Salah fired wide from the edge of the box, but Liverpool’s front three were starved of chances all night.
Here’s how they rated…
Liverpool
Alisson 7
One fine save early which was important, great save after break too
Alexander-Arnold 6
Seemed to struggle with space in behind in first half, stronger after break
Gomez 8
MOTM. Really purred on ball and powerful in defence, improving all the time
Van Dijk 8
Read game brilliantly as Napoli brought game to him, and as calm as ever
Robertson 6
Some good runs down left as always, didn’t find usual space going forward
Milner 6
Booked. Hard work in holding an energetic home midfield, pushed back deep
Wijnaldum 6
Looked comfortable in holding role, but Reds lost shape and got tougher
Keita 5
Gave ball away, but starting to find space just before injury ended night early
Salah 5
Just couldn’t get in game. When did get ball, made wrong decisions at times
Firmino 6
Not his usual influence, covered a lot of ground but couldn’t apply pressure
Mane 5
Showed some pace and trickery on flank but only sporadically, and not in it
Napoli: Ospina 6; Maksimovic 6, Albiol 7, Koulibaly 7, Mario Rui 7; Allan 6, Hamsik 6, Fabian Ruiz 6; Callejon 7, Milik 7, Insigne 7
