Bear Grylls’ Celebrity Island has been blasted by animal charity PETA for ‘torturing living beings for ratings’ after a pig choked to death on the show.
Upcoming upsetting scenes show the campmates deciding to capture the animal from the wild, with TOWIE star Pete Wicks, 29, begging his co-stars not to kill it.
Yet after the pig causes chaos, the celebrity contestants reportedly decide to tie it to a tree, which results in the hog accidentally strangling itself and choking to death.

‘Pete particularly was devastated.’
The graphic scenes were slammed by animal protection charity PETA for its ‘torture’ of animals, with a spokesman urging producers to scrap the use of animals in the show.
They told MailOnline: ‘Bear Grylls has a sordid history of torturing living beings to boost ratings.
‘It’s time to move beyond this worn-out trope of showing crude dominance over nature – and we urge producers to scrap the use of animals in these stupid TV stunts and replace them with challenges that don’t involve bullying or purposely putting animals in harm’s way.’
Upsetting: It has been reported that the upsetting scenes occur after the campmates decide to capture the animal from the wild, with the TOWIE star, 29, begging his co-stars not to kill it
A Channel 4 spokesperson said: ‘The celebrities were greatly affected by what happened and footage will be shown in the programme next Sunday in order to give a faithful account of their time on the island.’
Pete is an avid animal lover and last year he helped rescue 170 dogs from squalid conditions and certain death during his trip to South Korea, where he campaigned to end canine farms.
The TOWIE star revealed that he’s even given up meat since his heroic mission and hopes to return to the East Asian country, as well as Romania.
On the latest instalment of Celebrity Island, it showed the contestants discussing what they would do if they came across a pig and whether they would kill it.
Pete was left outraged at the thought of slaughtering the animal, as he insisted that he ‘didn’t need to take another life to survive’.
‘Heartbroken’: Yet after the pig causes chaos, the celebrity contestants reportedly decide to tie it to a tree, which results in the hog accidentally strangling itself and choking to death
Yet fans were quick to call out the pescatarian as they questioned what the difference was between killing a fish and a pig.
One person said: ‘LOL Pete Wicks is “heartbroken” and in tears over a pig being killed yet has no issues with killing fish. Pescetarians that say they don’t eat meat because they’re against animals being killed make zero sense #CelebrityIsland.’
A different fan put: ‘@P_Wicks01 ‘you don’t have to take a life to survive’ unless it is a fish, because s*d them? #CelebrityIsland #fishlivesmatter.’
Another show watcher commented: ‘@P_Wicks01 spinning me out on Celebrity Island.. doesn’t agree with killing animals but is a pescatarian and kills fish to eat…. which are animals?!’
Divided: Yet fans were quick to call out the pescatarian as they questioned what the difference was between killing a fish and a pig, while other viewers defended the reality star
While a different viewer added: ‘@P_Wicks01 going on about not killing an animal but happily eats fish?! Hypocracy at its finest. #celebrityisland.’
Yet other loyal fans were quick to rush to Pete and fellow pescatarians’ defence.
One person said: ‘People seriously need to learn the definition of pescetarianism and the rationale behind choosing to eat fish but not other mammels. Givin Pete s**t for choosing to not kill a pig or caiman, idiots. so glad @P_Wicks01 has stuck to his guns on #celebrityisland.’
While a different account added: ‘#CelebrityIsland catch up: my guy @P_Wicks01 fully smashing it, staying true to himself don’t think I could kill and eat a living breathing animal for the sake of a TV show.’

In October 2016, fans reacted with outrage after Made In Chelsea star Ollie Locke mounted and killed a crocodile on Celebrity Island.
The reality star, who was on the show to raise money for Stand Up to Cancer, was encouraged to jump on the reptile’s back and force a knife through the creature’s neck as the celebrities became increasingly hungry.
Ollie looked visibly shell-shocked during the aftermath of the killing, before eventually mumbling ‘I’m so sorry darling’ and told the camera: ‘I think that’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my entire life.’
Later in the episode the TV personality broke down in tears as he chatted to his mum explaining what he had just done.
Fans were left reeling at the brutal scenes with many flocking to Twitter to display their outrage.
One viewer wrote: ‘Oh my God Ollie Locke is showing absolutely no remorse for the crocodile. Tell you what let’s see the crocodile eating him that’s good TV.’
