New Champions League ball revealed

Champions League viewers will need to get used to a fresh look in the competition this season, after Adidas unveiled the ball for the 2018-19 season.

The German giants have kept the customary theme for the new campaign, with the instantly recognisable star-shaped panels remaining.

But in a bold bid striving for modernity and aiming to make it stand out that little bit more, Adidas have updated the look swapping black and navy for a lighter shade of blue, and inverting the colour scheme.

As such, rather than a white ball with black/navy stars, the new look features large blue panels as the base colour, with the stars now white, in a bid to make them stand out that little bit more.

Adidas have been designing the Champions League ball since 2001. The colouring is the same blue as used in the Champions League logo.

According to the designers, the ball – which remains nameless – represents a bold new look an is specifically designed to "highlight the iconic Champions League stars," while the streaked pattern on the blue panels ‘represents the blur of constant motion".

It’s also claimed that the ball will improve the performance of Europe’s leading lights, as "an outer texture coating…offers secure grip and complete control while the thermally bonded star panels provide a seamless surface for an improved first touch."

The new ball has not yet been used in this season’s competition, with the qualifying rounds sticking with last season’s ball.

Instead it will come into play when the group stage gets underway next month.
